Two jewelry stores looted in Dhaka market
Two jewelry stores in the Karnaphuli Garden City shopping center in Kakrail in Dhaka were looted early on Saturday.
Gold jewelry and silver were looted from stores, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for the Ramna area, Bayezidur Rahman.
The stores are Mohona Jewelers and Jewel Avenue Jewelers.
Police and shop owners were trying to confirm the amount of gold and silver looted in cash, AC Bayezidur said.
The crime scene unit of the Criminal Investigation Department visited the stores.
CCTV camera footage from the market showed a group of looters infiltrated shops and looted jewelry and cash.
DMP Ramna’s deputy commissioner Shazzadur Rahman said they mainly discovered that thieves entered the market through his bathrooms.
The thieves could have entered the bathroom from the outside or they were staying there before the market closed, the officer said.
The owners mainly estimated that more than 600 bhoris of gold could have been looted from the stores, police said.
Traders said there was a burglary in the market for the last time in 2014.
In February, masked people looted stores named Rajlaxmi Jewelers, Gentle Park, Vogue Sutana and Monsoon Raid at the Rapa Plaza market in Dhanmondi in Dhaka.
In another daring heist, armed people robbed as many as 19 jewelry stores in Ashulia in Savar on September 6.
The CID subsequently arrested more than a dozen people in Dhaka and adjacent districts for their alleged involvement in the heist.
