Two jewelry stores looted from Dhaka market

Two jewelry stores in Karnaphuli Garden City mall in Kakrail in Dhaka were looted early on Saturday.

Gold jewelery and cash were looted from shops, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner for Ramna Area Bayezidur Rahman said.

The stores are Mohona Jewelers and Jewel Avenue Jewelers.

Police and shop owners were trying to confirm the amount of gold and cash looted, AC Bayezidur said.

The Crime Scene Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department visited the stores.

CCTV footage from the market showed a group of looters snuck into the shops and looted the jewelry and cash.

Deputy Commissioner of DMP Ramna Division Shazzadur Rahman said they mainly found that the thieves entered the market through his bathrooms.

The thieves may have entered the bathroom from outside where they were staying before the market closed, the officer said.

The owners mainly estimated that more than 600 gold bhoris could have been looted from the shops, police said.

Traders said there was last a break-in in the market in 2014.

In February, masked people looted stores named Rajlaxmi Jewelers, Gentle Park, Vogue Sutana and Monsoon Raid at Rapa Plaza market in Dhanmondi in Dhaka.

In another audacious burglary, armed individuals robbed no less than 19 jewelry stores at Savar’s Ashulia on September 6.

The CID then arrested more than a dozen people in Dhaka and adjacent districts for their alleged involvement in the burglary.
